Every once in a while, I'll read over Proverbs 31, just as a personal assessment to gauge how the current state of my heart measures to the wonderful woman described in this passage. Most of us are familiar with it, right? However, this last time that I read it the first nine verses stuck out more that ever. King Lemuel's mother, firstly, described the character of a man that is worthy of this type of woman:
2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb! Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers! 3 Do not spend your strength[wealth] on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings. 4 It is not for kings, Lemuel-- it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. 6 Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! 7 Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. 8 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Does he overindulge in spirits? Does he treat others in a fair and just manner? Does he speak up for the less fortunate? Does he give to the poor? How does he treat the elderly? Some may chuckle at questions, but they matter greatly when looking into the heart of another. This passage excites me because when the Proverbs 31 Man comes together with the Proverbs 31 Woman, the that is a union of divine purpose and the will of God will be fulfilled upon the earth through their lives and descendants! **And just a side note ladies: If you are indeed a woman to strives to live up to this passage, then it takes someone who is firmly rooted to the ground to love you in the way you ought to be. If someone comes to the realization that they are unable to do this, do not take it to heart, but know that you deserve nothing less.
